Instructional Skills Workshop
Explore teaching concepts, build on your existing abilities and practice new teaching approaches through face-to-face instruction, theory applications and peer discussion in this four-day workshop. You'll also actively practice teaching and receive feedback in a supportive environment. The Instructional Skills Workshop is designed for university faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students seeking to sharpen their skills.
PROGRAM DETAILS
- An introduction to important instructional concepts
- Sessions on key teaching and learning topics, including:
- Questioning skills
- Constructive feedback
- Learning styles
- Classroom assessment techniques
- Learning environment
- Requirement to teach three short lessons and receive constructive feedback
- A structured approach to planning and delivering classes
- Optional classroom observations by the facilitators Please be aware that it is important that you participate in all four days of the program.
WHY PARTICIPATE IN THE ISW PROGRAM?
Developed in 1978, the ISW program has a long-standing history in instructional development and has been used extensively by many universities across North America.

BLENDED ISW
The blended learning ISW allows you to do 12 hours of learning from home or wherever is most convenient for you and 12 hours in the Teaching and Learning Centre. This format is organized in the following manner:
- 2 week period for pre-work and pre-readings - approximately 4 hours actual work time.
- 1/2 day on-site for introductions, instructions and some class work.
- Approximately 8 additional hours of off-site work in Blackboard.
- 3 - half day on-site to practice your teaching (additional preparation time will be required to plan you teaching sessions.)
We also offer you the opportunity to try an on-line session using Elluminate. This optional opportunity is done in a safe, supported atmosphere where you will have someone to help you if difficulties arise.
